Police Department
Police departments are important in a community because they are responsible for keeping the peace, handling emergencies, and helping civil during civil emergencies. Police officers are both part of the community they serve and the government protecting that community. The purpose of law enforcement in a free society is to promote public safety and uphold the rule of law so that individual liberty may flourish1.
The police departments’ operational units are responsible for maintaining order, enforcing the law, and providing services to citizens. Organization is very important to the effectiveness of the police department. Police have areas, or a beat, that they are assigned to in order to maintain order, enforce the law, and provide services to citizens2.
