Fire departments are essential for the safety of the community. Firefighters fulfill five essential functions that are not fulfilled by other members of the emergency services. These functions are:

1. Life safety: The primary purpose of firefighters is to help ensure the safety of lives and that means saving people’s lives by preventing and extinguishing fires and it also means by offering medical care during emergencies.
2. Incident containment.
3. Property safety.
4. Environmental safety.
5. Educating the public.
